The necktie has its origins in 17th-century France when Croatian mercenaries would wear them as a symbol of allegiance to the French army. The king at the time, Louis XIV, liked the look so much he adopted it into his own fashion oeuvre. Had the Italian brand Brunello Cucinelli existed then, we might hazard a guess as to what particular modern tie the royal would have chosen - this silk iteration would be our first choice.
